Identifying Major Gift Donors:
More than 187,000 charities are registered in the UK. With individuals in the UK donating £9.9billion in 2008/2009 to charitable causes (UK Giving 2009), the relationship between charities and individuals is exceptionally strong. Economic pressures on other sources of income are increasingly being felt in fundraising teams; strong relationships with major donors are more crucial than ever.
To maximise the benefit of major donor relationships, all charities, including hospices, must not only have a comprehensive approach to building and maintaining strong relationships but also a good working knowledge of lots of “types” of fundraising, from grant-making to legacies, including a broad understanding of the tax implications for different ways of giving. A donor could choose to give directly, through a private trust, a company or even by leaving a gift in their will.
Be warned: excellent relationships with your donors will lead to long and beneficial relationships for both you and the donor.
